The Ministry of Health is deeply saddened by the untimely passing of 2 infants at The General Hospital last week. Such loss is unimaginable, and our thoughts and prayers are with the respective families.
The ministry is aware of claims alleging medical negligence in these infant deaths. We take these claims seriously, as the health, safety, and well-being of all our patients are paramount. In this regard, we have commenced an internal review of both incidents. To date, we have reviewed video footage in the Accident and Emergency Department. We can confirm that our healthcare providers on duty at the time did not fail to act. The standard protocols and procedures for medical emergencies were duly followed. Additionally, autopsies have been requested in both cases, as well as the medical reports.
It is important that we understand the circumstances surrounding these incidents. However, cognisant of the legalities associated with patients’ medical information, the ministry is unable to comment specifically on these matters.
Health services delivery is fraught with numerous challenges, but we remain committed to improving the quality of care given to all who access our services. We strive to ensure that all patients receive the best possible medical care at our facilities, and we continuously work to uphold the highest standards in healthcare.
To the families, we extend our heartfelt condolences during this incredibly difficult time.
