On Friday, 22 December, Spicemas Corporation, in collaboration with UNESCO and the Grenada Steelband Association, held the closing ceremony for the Steelpan Tuning Training workshop.
Eighteen participants graduated from the workshop, learning the art of steelpan tuning from internationally acclaimed Grenadian-born steelpan tuner Dudley Dickson.
The workshop spanned over 3 weeks and provided participants with hands-on training and theoretical knowledge of the intricate process of steelpan tuning. Graduates of the workshop are now equipped with some of the skills to develop and preserve the unique cultural heritage of steelpan music in Grenada and beyond. Throughout the workshop and at the closing ceremony, the participants were encouraged to continue practicing the craft, as it is through constant practice that the pan-tuning skills are enhanced and further developed.
Hon. Ron Redhead, Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture, presented the certificates and commended the participants for their dedication and commitment to learning this unique skill of our traditional art form. He emphasised preserving and promoting steelpan music as an integral part of Grenada’s cultural identity. The closing ceremony concluded with a performance by one of the graduates, who played and showcased the sweet sound of one of the newly tuned steelpans from the workshop.
