It has been 5 years since Art House 473 opened its doors in Calliste. Amid global conversations about how time has been strange lately, the pandemic insisted on a slower pace for the last couple of years.
Formerly a Pentecostal church, the building has been repurposed and refurbished to make creativity its central theme. The space has seen a number of exhibits, public talks, film screenings, classes, and 65 life drawing sessions. We are celebrating 5 years of art, community, and engagement with an anniversary exhibit on Thursday, 9 November. We will be showing several artists whom we have worked with over the past few years and will hold an opening reception from 5:30 pm to recognise where we have been and where we are going!
Art House 473 was realised in 2018 as an outpouring of Susan Mains Gallery which opened at Spiceland Mall, Morne Rouge in 2002. It is a space that allows for exhibition/gallery space as well as a workshop and residential space for resident director Asher Mains. Shortened as “Art House” it has not received funds from government or any other organisation and is funded through the sale of artwork. Primarily showing work by Susan and Asher Mains, Art House also represents the work of other local artists including Oliver Benoit, Godfrey Luke, John Henry, and Jason de Caires Taylor.
Susan and Asher Mains have a combined 50+ years of working in art in Grenada and have started a number of initiatives to see contemporary art move forward including the Grenada Contemporary exhibit, Art School Greenz, representation of Grenada at the Biennale di Venezia, amongst other volunteer community activity. We are excited to celebrate another milestone with this 5th-anniversary exhibit and continue to look forward to future possibilities! Susan Mains said, “Art House 473 gives a core from which many stories can be shared. Nothing is more powerful than the visual arts cementing these stories in our collective memories and inspiring others to tell their stories.”
Free entry to exhibition on 9 November from 5.30 pm. All are welcome.
