Javid Mitchell, a distinguished Grenadian graduate, has ascended to new heights of academic achievement, earning the esteemed distinction of graduating Summa Cum Laude from Howard University.

Several accolades, including the highest GPA in the College of Engineering and Architecture and the Computer Science Department, have marked his remarkable journey at Howard University. Mitchell’s relentless pursuit of excellence has not only set a new benchmark for academic standards but has also positioned him as a trailblazer in his field, inspiring future generations to reach for greatness.

Mitchell’s enthusiasm for technology and innovation helped him develop a remarkable aptitude for computer science from a young age. His formal schooling started at the esteemed Grenada Boys’ Secondary School (GBSS), where he developed his academic abilities and internalised the school’s slogan, “Non-Palma Sine Labore” (No reward without labour). This philosophy led his life, which taught him the importance of tenacity and diligence.

Mitchell continued his studies by attending T A Marryshow Community College to earn an Associate’s degree in Computer Systems Engineering. He established a standard for his future successes by achieving the highest GPA in his programme, thanks to his extraordinary commitment and academic prowess.

Armed with determination and an unwavering focus on his goals, Mitchell set his sights on Howard University, a prestigious institution known for its commitment to excellence. Despite facing financial obstacles and the absence of scholarships, he remained undeterred. Mitchell’s family played a crucial role in supporting his dreams, assisting him in covering the tuition for his first year. Financial constraints led Mitchell to make difficult choices, including living with family to alleviate the burden of housing expenses. Commuting for 2 hours each way, with a significant portion of the journey encompassing a 45-minute walk, he demonstrated an unwavering commitment to his education. With the generous support of his family, Mitchell persevered through financial obstacles. The subsequent years required Mitchell to rely on his resourcefulness and hard work to fund his studies and living expenses.

Throughout his academic journey, Mitchell has exemplified resilience and determination. He undertook multiple internships, leveraging the knowledge gained from coursework and real-world experiences to create side projects and offer tutoring services. These efforts not only supplemented his financial needs but also enhanced his skill set, preparing him for the challenges that lay ahead.

Two of Javid Mitchell’s awards

Mitchell was dedicated to greatness outside of the classroom as well. He held leadership positions and actively participated in many extracurricular activities while attending Howard University. He served as the president of the HU Blockchain Club, collaborating with faculty members and a blockchain startup to introduce a blockchain curriculum at the university. Additionally, Mitchell served as the Technical Chair of the Google Developer Student Club, contributing to the vibrant tech community on campus.

His exceptional academic performance and dedication to his field earned him membership in prestigious honour societies such as Tau Beta Pi, Upsilon Pi Epsilon, and the Association for Computing Machinery. These affiliations further reinforced his commitment to advancing knowledge and fostering peer collaboration.

Outside his academic pursuits, Mitchell finds fulfilment in exploring the world, capturing moments through photography, and immersing himself in outdoor adventures. He believes in embracing life’s experiences and cherishing the beauty surrounding us.

Mitchell’s journey is not without the influence of significant mentors who have shaped his path. The late Sir Royston Hopkin, a renowned figure in Grenada’s hospitality industry, played an instrumental role in Mitchell’s life, providing invaluable advice and insights. Sir Royston’s unwavering belief in excellence resonated deeply with Mitchell, inspiring him to strive for greatness in everything he undertakes.

In addition to his academic achievements, Mitchell’s passion for renewable energy and green technology led him to contribute as an operations consultant at Spice Island Beach Resort. In this role, he actively contributed to technological improvements and sustainability efforts, aligning his values with the future of sustainable energy.

Mitchell’s pursuit of greatness beyond academia as he fosters a strong love for green technologies and renewable energy. This passion inspired him to work with Modern Electrical Solutions, a well-known Grenada firm devoted to offering local communities sustainable energy solutions. Mitchell contributed substantially to the company’s technology development and sustainability initiatives. His participation in solar initiatives led to an accumulation of more than 500 kWh.

Furthermore, Mitchell’s dedication to sustainable energy led him to complete the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP) certification while pursuing his BS in Computer Science. This additional qualification further demonstrates his dedication to improving green technologies and positively impacting the environment.

Mitchell’s journey is a testament to the power of perseverance, resilience, and an unwavering pursuit of excellence. His remarkable academic achievements at Howard University and his passion for technology and sustainable energy have positioned him as a role model for aspiring students and professionals. With his Grenadian roots and global aspirations, Mitchell embodies the spirit of non-palma sine labore — proving that nothing is impossible with hard work and determination.

As Javid Mitchell embarks on the next chapter of his journey, he extends his heartfelt gratitude to his family and friends who have supported him throughout this arduous path. His parents, Allan and Adis Mitchell, grandmother Theresa Mitchell Ross, his Spice Family, Janelle Hopkin, Lady Betty Hopkin and Brian Hardy, Theresa Burroughs, and his unwavering faith in a higher power have been instrumental in his success.

Mitchell’s story is a beacon of hope and inspiration, reminding us all that one can achieve greatness and impact the world with passion, perseverance, and a steadfast commitment to excellence. As he forges ahead in his professional career, with experiences at industry giants such as Microsoft, Amazon (AWS), and GoDaddy, Mitchell is poised to revolutionise the technology landscape and shape a brighter future for future generations. His remarkable story inspires aspiring students, affirming that the impossible can be achieved with unwavering determination, hard work, and a steadfast dedication to excellence.

Mitchell’s dedication to professional and personal development has led him to embark on a new chapter in his career. He recently accepted a position at the famous Washington DC–based consulting company KCIC. Mitchell hopes to improve his analytical and problem-solving abilities while helping businesses and organisations by working at KCIC. He will have the chance to fully immerse himself in the consulting field and gain valuable experience in delivering innovative solutions to clients.

Looking ahead, Mitchell has set his sights on pursuing a Master’s in Sustainability Engineering at Columbia University. His commitment to addressing environmental issues and passion for sustainability has driven him to further his studies. Mitchell hopes to become a leader in adopting sustainable practices and enacting positive change in Grenada and elsewhere by acquiring advanced knowledge and expertise through his graduate studies.

In addition to his career goals, Mitchell is committed to using his knowledge and experiences to impact his own nation positively. He plans to start a non–profit organisation in Grenada that specialises in assisting prospective students with the steps involved in getting an education in the US. Mitchell seeks to enable gifted students to overcome obstacles and successfully navigate the complexity of the American education system by offering mentorship, resources, and assistance. Through this project, he wants to motivate and assist the upcoming generation of Grenadian students in realising their academic and career goals.
