The Grenada Hotel and Tourism Association (GHTA) has been instrumental in bringing to life the Grenada Floriculture Cluster Development Project.
The project is primarily funded by Compete Caribbean, with additional funding from the Sandals Foundation. Compete Caribbean is funded by the Inter-American Bank, the United Kingdom, Canada, and the Caribbean Development Bank.
The GHTA, as the business support organisation for the project, along with Aine Brathwaite, the Cluster Manager, has been instrumental in the project’s success. This Floriculture Cluster Project aims to strengthen the floriculture sector in Grenada by increasing its capacity and technical capabilities to produce quality tropical flowers, including Anthuriums, Orchids, Heliconias and Ginger Lilies.
This project is a critical step forward in capitalising on the growing demand for tropical flowers, which has far exceeded supply in recent years. The project will strengthen the linkage with the Pure Grenada brand and further leverage the success of the Grenada Chelsea Flower Show Committee over the past 20 years.
Through the Floriculture Cluster Project launched in 2020, flower farmers and arrangers have received essential training and education about growing and harvesting flowers, climate resilience, the production of organic pesticides, fungicides, and fertilisers, as well as other critical aspects of the floriculture industry.
In addition, a branding/marketing plan was created for the sector. This support will enable these businesses to improve their craft, increase profitability, and successfully market and export their products to regional and international markets.
Due to the initial success of the project, additional funding has been provided to the sector by Compete Caribbean for the creation of a website and a supply & demand App to help facilitate sales as well as funding for a 3-day Flower Festival to be held towards the end of 2023.
GHTA has worked closely with Compete Caribbean and other key players, such as the Ministry of Agriculture and Floriculture Farmers and Arrangers, to make this project a reality.
As the excitement builds, GHTA is proud to continue supporting and developing Grenada’s floriculture businesses. By working together and embracing what makes Grenada unique, we can create a brighter future for this fantastic country and its people.
