One of the announcements made by Minister for Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs and Local Government, Hon. Tevin Andrews, during his contribution to the 2023 budget debate in the House of Parliament, is being fulfilled.

Preliminary work, through a public–private partnership (PPP) arrangement, has begun on the Hillsborough Jetty. Work on the jetty is taking place as Government seeks to boost commercial activities within the town of Hillsborough. Two engineers, Andrew Hutchinson and Enrique Oxley, are presently on island conducting the preliminary work funded by businessmen Trevor Kent and Leo Joseph.

Minister Andrews is very grateful to Kent and Joseph, noting that this sort of partnership spells well for the development of the twin-isle parish. Kent, who was present at the start of the work, said he is contributing to the project for the people of Carriacou and Petite Martinique.

The engineers are from the Barbadian company Stantec Consulting Caribbean Limited, which has provided more than 40 years of engineering consultancy services in Barbados and across the Caribbean.

Hillsborough is the main commercial centre of Carriacou, with the current jetty constructed around 1976. It has undergone several upgrades over the years. The jetty, which is operated by the Grenada Ports Authority (GPA) has been out of commission since 2019, following the construction and opening of the new port in Tyrrel Bay.

Great news. However, I can’t imagine that the Grenada Ports Authority did not see the benefit to maintain port operations in Hillsborough.

In fact, there should be proper ports in Windward and Petite Martinique.
