A distinguished lecture series is being launched by the Organisation of Commonwealth Caribbean Bar Associations (OCCBA) to be rotated and named after several outstanding jurists, lawyers and bar leaders in recognition of their outstanding contribution to the legal profession.
In a series styled “Distinguished OCCBA Lecture Series”, Dr Lloyd Barnett OJ delivers the inaugural lecture on 29 November 2022 in honour of the late Nancy Mae Anderson OD, an indefatigable champion of human rights during her distinguished career. Anderson, an American by birth but Jamaican by choice, passed away in Jamaica on 29 November 2021 after well over 40 years of impactful positive service to the legal profession.
“Humanism in Human Rights Advocacy” is the topic selected for the inaugural lecture which will be delivered via zoom and other electronic platforms on the first anniversary of Anderson’s passing. It begins at 5.30 pm (Jamaica Time); 4.30 pm (AST/Eastern Caribbean Time); 3.30 pm (Belize Time).
Dr Barnett himself has worked closely and tirelessly with Anderson in several organisations including OCCBA, the Independent Jamaica Council for Human Rights, Citizens Action for Free and Fair Elections, and Greater Caribbean for Life. Together they made an excellent team, leading the charge in the defence and promotion of human rights, and as strong anti-death penalty advocates. An internationally acclaimed constitutional expert, Dr Barnett has also served as President of the Jamaican Bar Association and OCCBA, and Chairman of the General Legal Council of Jamaica, the University Council of Jamaica, and the Caribbean Council of Legal Education (CLE).
Both Dr Barnett and Anderson are honorees of OCCBA — in July 2019 and July 2021 respectively — for their long and distinguished service to the legal profession.
OCCBA is the umbrella body representing bar associations throughout the Caribbean, from Bahamas and Jamaica in the North to Guyana in the South. In recent years OCCBA has undertaken several new initiatives including ongoing continuing legal education for lawyers throughout the region to lift the quality of service to the profession; and the publication of a biannual OCCBA Journal.
The “Distinguished OCCBA Lecture Series” is intended to enhance both its continuing legal education and public education programmes and is expected to become a fixture on OCCBA’s annual programme of activities. The lectures are open to the public.
