Governor General Dame Dr Cécile La Grenade, representing the British Monarch in Grenada, will be among Heads of State who will be attending the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II on 19 September 2022.

Queen Elizabeth II was Queen of the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth realms from 6 February 1952 until her death on 8 September 2022. She was Queen regnant of 32 sovereign states during her lifetime and 15 at the time of her death. Grenada is among the 15.

On Monday, 12 September 2022, the Governor General opened a condolence book for parliamentarians, cabinet members and the public to sign expressing sympathy and compassion to the Royal Family. The book will be presented to the family.

In a statement following the announcement of her death, Dame Cécile said she was deeply saddened and “The legacy of her leadership and exemplary service shall live on indelibly.” The statement pointed out that the Queen served in the position for 70 years.

Hours after her passing, Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell also issued a statement expressing sympathy and condolences to the His Majesty The King, The Queen Consort and all Members of the Royal Family on behalf of the Government and the people of Grenada. “I am sincerely saddened to learn of the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. As Head of the Commonwealth, Her Majesty’s steady leadership helped to unite people and countries from around the globe in common cause, and for this, Queen Elizabeth II will always be remembered. We mourn her passing and will continue to honour her legacy.”

As a mark of respect, flags throughout the State are flown at half-mast until the date of Her Majesty’s funeral.

At the opening of the condolence book, Prime Minister Mitchell refused to comment on the death, or Grenada’s future with regards to having King Charles continuing to be the Head of State. “No comment for personal reasons,” he told a reporter.

Opposition Leader Dr Keith Mitchell who was appointed a Privy Councillor in 2004 and is automatically a member of the Ascension Council also expressed his sadness in a statement: “It is with a deep sense of sadness that the Leader of His Majesty’s Opposition in Grenada, Political Leader of the New National Party and member of His Majesty’s Privy Council, Former Prime Minister, Dr the Right Hon. Keith C Mitchell learnt of the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second of the United Kingdom. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth as Head of State of Grenada and of the Commonwealth provided tremendous inspiration to all for over half of a century and will be greatly missed.”

Kisha Grant-Alexander, currently Grenada’s High Commissioner in London, has been participating in relevant activities to celebrate and honour the life of the late Queen.

Excellent to hear, our island shall be well represented at such a historic, if deeply sad, event. We are entering a new era

Also, good on the PM for having the dignity to not use a time like this to run his mouth about cutting ties or a republic, unlike other regional leaders. Very dignified
