Four minority political parties in Grenada will not be able to use their advertised symbols on elections ballot paper because of a legal failure by the Parliamentary Elections Office.
Leader of the Movement for Independent Candidates (MIC) Alban Abdurraheem Jones said that he received a called from Supervisor of Elections on Tuesday informing him that his symbol of the “light” cannot be used because it was not gazetted.
Jones said that he received an approval letter for the symbol since March 2012 and “cannot understand why the Parliamentary Elections Office didnot do what it had to do.”
“They are now offering me other symbols to choose from that are registered in the office, but that is a major problem because i now have to reeducate my supporters about the new symbol in less than 48 hours and secondly, i am not sure that the parliamentary elections office can just offer me to use something that is registered in the name of another party, what will happen if someone step forward and claim the sign?” he asked.
Other parties facing a similar difficulty are the National United Front (NUF), the People’s United Labour Party (PULP), and the Grenada United Patriotic Movement (GUPM).
