The Government of Grenada has launched its 2016 School Uniform program.

The program falls under the umbrella of the Ministry of Social Development — Support for Education Empowerment and Development (SEED) Program, which is geared towards assisting the vulnerable families throughout Grenada.

Minister for Implementation in the Prime Minister’s Ministry Hon. Alexandra Otway–Noel, Senior Administrative Officer within the Prime Minister’s Ministry Mrs Naomi Jeremiah, and SEED Program Manager Mrs. Lenora George–Buckmire, addressed the media during launch.

Minister Otway-Noel announced that over 1,000 vouchers have been completed and the application process is ongoing, as the Government targets last year’s figure of 4,000 beneficiaries. Hon. Otway–Noel said $1 million has been budgeted for the program.

There has been a shift in the funding for the program for the students of primary and secondary schools. According to Jeremiah in previous years, primary school students received a voucher of $50. This has been increased to $100 per student. The allocation for secondary students has also been increased from $100, to $150 per student. A total of $400 will be allotted to each household where necessary.

Program Manager George–Buckmire said the SEED Unit will use the 2015 model to for the uniforms program this year. She described last year’s execution as a success and said the Unit is anticipating a smooth implementation for 2016. According to George-Buckmire, the relationships the Ministry forged with the schools and Principals are responsible for the successful implementation of the program.

The vouchers are valid for 3 months, until 30 September 2016.
