A new campaign launched by the International Planned Parenthood Federation is calling for better quality Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) to advance young people’s human rights.
The campaign — Know it, Own it — was launched on 18 May 2016, by Grenada Planned Parenthood Association (GPPA) on their Facebook page, and will continue over the next few months with calls to relevant Ministers of Government, school competitions and activities put on by the youth arm of GPPA the Youth Advocacy Movement (YAM).
Across the world, IPPF’s Member Associations are organising events to secure youth, public and policymakers’ support. These range from conferences, giant public classrooms, competitions, TV, radio programmes, and film screenings to theatre and dance shows.
A new report has also been launched as part of the campaign. ‘Everyone’s right to know: delivering comprehensive sexuality education for all young people’ urges governments and policymakers to strengthen policies around sexuality education to improve the human rights of young people around the world.
Executive Director of Grenada Planned Parenthood Association, Jeannine Sylvester Gill said: “The Know it, Own It campaign will raise awareness around the need for better CSE. Young people have human rights, including sexual and reproductive rights. Making sure that the world’s youth population grows up happy and healthy also brings benefits to communities and society.”
IPPF Director General, Tewodros Melesse said: “Comprehensive sexuality education should be participatory, innovative and reach the most marginalized young people. The starting point, and the absolute minimum requirement, is that CSE must reach all young people — wherever they are. We must equip young people with information about health as well as the positive aspects of sex and sexuality.”
