The Grenada Tourism Authority (GTA) facilitated a fire safety training for 6 hoteliers on mainland Grenada on Wednesday, 8 July 2015, at the Grenada Bureau of Standards conference room. The 4–hour training facilitated by the Fire Department of the Royal Grenada Police Force consisted of a theoretical and a practical module.
“Fire safety is a large component of the Standard Operating Procedures for the accommodation sector and other tourism enterprises. While we aim for fire prevention, in the event of an emergency, we want to ensure that our tourism stakeholders are able to respond in the best interest of their staff and guests,” said Ms Susan Cadore, Quality Assurance Officer at the GTA.
The first module taught participants of the types of fires, the fire triangle, type of extinguishers, how to use extinguishers, and the rules of fire fighting. The second module gave a hands-on demonstration of how to extinguish a live fire.
“It is really good to know that if there is a fire at the hotel, anyone of us can assist in extinguishing it, as previously we would have to call on management,” said Mrs Eva Richards, Reservations Manager at Siesta Hotel.
The 34 participants from 9 organizations, including 6 hotels, the Grenada Bureau of Standards, and the Grenada Tourism Authority, received a reference manual and will soon receive a certificate of participation from the Grenada Tourism Authority. Hoteliers of Carriacou and Petite Martinique will receive the same fire safety training within the coming months.
