On Friday, 5 June 2026, the Global Water Partnership-Caribbean (GWP-C), in partnership with the Girl Guides Association of Grenada and the Biology, Ecology, and Conservation (BEC) Department at St George’s University (SGU), hosted an engaging field-based activity to celebrate World Environment Day.

The event, held at a river in St David, attracted approximately 15 participants, including Brownies and guides from the St Martin de Porres Catholic school, along with their adult chaperones and members of the GWP-C Team.

This year, World Environment Day, 5 June 2026, was observed under the theme Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future, and aimed to inspire the kids to understand and appreciate the natural environment.

“It was a simple but powerful way to assess river health by looking at the macroinvertebrates,” explained Dr Roxanne Graham-Victor, Regional Coordinator for the GWP-C. “What was particularly encouraging is that despite the various activities that take place around the river, the results suggested that this section, used, is in relatively good condition,” she added.

The students found several species, including fish, crayfish, and several freshwater snails with right-opening shells, which are generally associated with healthier aquatic environments and good water quality. Beyond the science, it was really rewarding to see the excitement and curiosity of the participants as they explored the river and discovered these organisms for themselves.

Participants visited the river and were guided by Dr Graham-Victor to use the Surber sampler to collect aquatic organisms from the streambed. They learned about freshwater ecosystems and river health, collected samples, observed organisms using magnifying glasses and trays, discussed how different organisms indicate water quality, and explored the importance of protecting rivers and watersheds.

The World Environment Day activity offered Brownies a unique opportunity to experience environmental science in action while fostering environmental awareness, stewardship, and appreciation for Grenada’s freshwater resources.
