Message from Minister Lennox Andrews on current seafood export issue

“Today, I want to speak directly to the people of Grenada – especially our hardworking fishers, processors, exporters, and families who depend on the sea.

Our fishing industry is not just an economic sector; it is part of who we are as a nation. It supports livelihoods, strengthens food security, and contributes significantly to our exports and national development.

In light of the current seafood restrictions, I want to assure the public that this Government is fully committed to protecting both the interests of our people and the long-term sustainability of our Fisheries Sector.

We are taking immediate steps to:

  • Strengthen regulatory oversight and compliance systems
  • Improve traceability and quality assurance standards
  • Work closely with our international partners to restore full market access as quickly as possible
  • Provide targeted support to affected fishers and exporters during this period

At the same time, we are accelerating efforts to increase local value-added production, reduce import dependence, and expand domestic consumption of high-quality Grenadian seafood — including our world-class yellowfin tuna.

This moment requires unity, transparency, and decisive action. My ministry will maintain open communication with industry stakeholders and the public as we navigate this challenge together.

The Government stands firmly with our fishers. We will correct what needs to be corrected, strengthen what needs to be strengthened, and ensure that the future of Grenada’s Fisheries sector is resilient, competitive, and sustainable.”
