Grenada Investment Development Corporation (GIDC) facilitated a 2-day training session on the mainland and Carriacou on 27 and 29 October, respectively, for the participants of the Grenada Food and Nutrition Council’s (GFNC) Snack Attack contest.

The participating schools are Bishop’s College, Grenada Boys Secondary School, Grenada Seventh Day Adventist Comprehensive School, J W Fletcher Catholic Secondary School and Presentation Brothers College. The goal of the contest is for them to prepare and transform healthy snack ideas into viable business ventures.

GFNC is working to shape a generation of youth who are health-conscious, entrepreneurial, and committed to Grenadian produce. They aim to encourage young people to recognise the vital connection between nutrition, academic achievement, and sustainable development.

In her welcome remarks, GFNC Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Lydia Browne outlined the vision and scope of Snack Attack, emphasising that its goal is to encourage young people to create healthy snacks using locally grown ingredients. “We want young people to see food not just as fuel, but as a creative and cultural expression, one that supports their health, celebrates local agriculture, and builds pride in our Grenadian identity. Snack Attack is not only about inspiration; it’s a strategic step toward transforming our schools’ food environments by fostering healthier choices and deeper connections to local food systems.”

To assist the students with their preparation for the December 2025 contest, GFNC invited GIDC to collaborate, recognising that GIDC provides technical assistance, workshops, and tailored support to help entrepreneurs start, grow, and expand their businesses. The session, led by GIDC’s Senior Vice President Khesha Mitchell with support from GIDC’s Business Development Specialists Katelyn Brathwaite and Lois McGuire, equipped students with practical knowledge in business planning, marketing strategy, and entrepreneurship.

Commenting on GIDC’s key role during the pre-judging period of the GFNC Snack Attack contest, “So, today we are covering how to prepare their proposal, the proposal that they would have to submit as well as developing the marketing strategy and the marketing plan, and how to pitch that successfully so they come out as champions at the end of the day,” said Mitchell.

The Snack Attack contest will culminate in December, with the students formally presenting their snack products before a panel of judges. Entries will be evaluated on ingredients, taste, nutrition, marketability, and production feasibility. A People’s Choice Award will also be determined through online voting, adding an interactive element for schools and communities.

Through initiatives like Snack Attack, the Grenada Food and Nutrition Council continues to empower Grenadians to become more food secure and self-reliant.
