Two weeks in China: 2 weeks of inspiration, innovation, and eye-opening experiences that no Caribbean country can yet offer.
For 20-year-old Deshawn Mc Queen — known online as ‘DeshAloof’ — of Beaulieu, St George, the trip was more than just an overseas adventure. It was a crash course in storytelling, digital media, and creativity at a scale he had never seen before. “I learned a lot in terms of how to structure my content for maximum engagement, how to tell a story that really connects with people, and how to approach digital creation with both precision and imagination, that would definitely help me create better content,” he explained.
Mc Queen was the youngest among more than 30 influencers from 22 Latin American and the Caribbean (LAC) countries selected as winners of the 3rd China-LAC Short Video Contest, a programme designed by the China Public Diplomacy Association to foster cultural exchange and deepen mutual understanding between China and the region.
The recognition placed Grenada on a growing map of young digital voices gaining global exposure. As part of the programme, the content creators spent 2 weeks engaging with some of China’s most influential companies, cultural institutions, and technology hubs. The group’s itinerary included several high-end companies and organisations that offered a behind-the-scenes look at how China has harnessed technology and creativity to shape global narratives.
For Mc Queen, the experience proved both educational and inspirational. He said interactive VR screens, immersive displays, and new content formats weren’t just eye-catching, they were “practical lessons on how to tell stories that resonate across borders.”
One of the highlights was a visit to the headquarters of Alibaba Group in Hangzhou, Zhejiang. Founded in 1999, the multinational giant dominates global e-commerce, cloud computing, logistics, and digital entertainment. For Mc Queen, walking through Alibaba’s offices, seeing the technology, and watching how content is structured and distributed in real time was nothing short of exhilarating. “When it comes to social media, content creation, and the filmmaking industry, China has it, in terms of advancement, development, and opportunities for content creators,” he remarked.
The exposure to innovation on such a scale reinforced his belief that Caribbean creators can compete globally if given the right tools and opportunities. Being surrounded by fellow influencers from across Latin America and the Caribbean was equally powerful. Mc Queen said the exchange of ideas and techniques gave him confidence in the region’s creative potential.
For the young content creator, the 2 weeks in China may mark the start of a much larger journey, one that positions his voice at the forefront of the digital future. What might seem like just another trip was, for him, an awakening, a blueprint for how Caribbean creators and influencers can push the boundaries of storytelling and compete on the global stage.
In addition to building an engaged audience, Mc Queen has successfully monetised his YouTube channel, turning his creativity into a sustainable income stream. By leveraging ad revenue, sponsorship opportunities, and brand partnerships, he demonstrates how content creation can move beyond a hobby and develop into a viable career path. “Reaching this milestone required dedication and consistency, as YouTube monetisation only becomes possible after achieving at least 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 watch hours. Today, I earn based on the views my content generates, and I am committed to making content creation as a long-term career.”
His journey demonstrates to other aspiring creators that with persistence, strategy, and originality, digital platforms can open doors to financial independence and professional growth.
Armed with fresh knowledge, inspiration, and perspective, Mc Queen has returned home determined to apply the lessons across his platforms. He plans to implement these strategies across his various platforms on YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook.
He hopes to not only grow his personal reach but also help “change the perspectives on how content creators engage audiences with digital storytelling, not just within Grenada but across the Caribbean.”
