  • NNP has 4 seats in 15-seat Lower House of Parliament
  • 3 senators in Upper House represent Opposition Leader
  • NNP working extremely hard preparing for next general election

Emmalin Pierre, Opposition Leader and Political Leader of the main opposition New National Party (NNP), believes that Grenada’s next general election, constitutionally due by October 2027, will be called before 2027.

Addressing a political meeting in the community of Morne Longue, which is part of the St Andrew North West constituency, Pierre told supporters that the NNP has been working extremely hard in preparation for the next general election. “For some of you, you may think constitutionally that this election is going to be in 2027. I say to you tonight, I don’t sleep in the same house as the Prime Minister for this country, but I can tell you one thing: elections will be far before 2027 and as a party I want to say tonight, whenever it is called, the  New National Party will be ready.”

The NNP currently has 4 seats in the 15-seat Lower House of Parliament, while 3 of the senators in the Upper House are representing the Opposition Leader.

Grenada’s constitution provides for the Prime Minister to dissolve Parliament and call fresh elections at any time before the constitutionally mandated period of 5 years. Speaking at the adjournment of the 18 December 2024 session of the Lower House, Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell said that his government is just getting started and having an election in 2025 is not a priority. “There is no election that will be called in Grenada in 2025. There are lots of elections taking place in the region, starting with places like Suriname, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, St Vincent and the Grenadines, The Bahamas, in the not-too-distant future.”

The ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration, led by Dickon Mitchell, will be celebrating 3 years in office on 23 June 2025. Several political observers believe that 2025 will be a campaigning year, and the next general election will be held immediately before or after the 4th anniversary in 2026.
