The Government of Grenada, through its Government Information Service (GIS), has entered into a landmark partnership with UWItv Global, the official public information arm of The University of the West Indies (The UWI).

This strategic alliance aims to enhance media collaboration and strengthen regional communication efforts.

The partnership was formally established on 21 February 2025, with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) during the 48th Regular Meeting of the Caricom Heads, held in Barbados. The agreement was signed by Grenada’s Prime Minister and Minister of Information Honourable Dickon Mitchell, and Vice-Chancellor of The UWI Professor Sir Hilary Beckles.

Speaking on this momentous occasion, Vice-Chancellor Beckles highlighted the pivotal role of UWItv in amplifying Caribbean voices: “UWI is unique in having a 24/7 educational channel dedicated to Caribbean people and culture while engaging with the world. I am especially proud that UWItv is responsible for covering these types of government meetings annually, disseminating content worldwide to international networks. We are honoured to play this role in serving the Government of Grenada.”

Prime Minister Hon. Dickon Mitchell also emphasised the benefits of this collaboration: “The opportunity for the Government Information Service to collaborate and benefit from The University of the West Indies and UWItv is a natural and welcome relationship. We look forward to it growing from strength to strength, and we expect that GIS will see improvements in content quality and variety through this partnership.”

Strengthening Media, Knowledge Sharing, and Regional Development

UWItv Global is a leading multimedia platform that broadcasts across 20 countries, including Panama and Latin America, reaching over 5 million viewers through FLOW, the region’s foremost telecommunications provider. This partnership reinforces Grenada’s commitment to media excellence, knowledge-sharing, and public education, aligning with broader Caribbean development initiatives.

By combining UWItv’s academic and technological resources with GIS’s expertise in public broadcasting, this collaboration enhances the region’s media capacity while fostering a deeper understanding of key socio-economic and cultural issues.

Key areas of cooperation under the MOU Include:

  • Development of specialised media programmes addressing regional priorities such as climate resilience, public health, and cultural preservation
  • Training and capacity-building through internships, joint workshops, and seminars for technical staff and media professionals
  • Advancement of research and collaboration in media technologies, audience engagement strategies, and digital broadcasting
  • Exploration of emerging solutions, including artificial intelligence and new media technologies, to enhance media operations and digital content production

This milestone agreement represents a transformative step forward in Caribbean media, strengthening Grenada’s media landscape while furthering The UWI’s commitment to regional development, innovation, and advocacy.

Hoping that the Major Economic and Social Policy embrace a more Regional Policy to Development which Grenada pushed with Leaders like TA Marryshow and that Federal idea which died in 1962.
