The Government of Grenada, through the Ministry of Climate Resilience, the Environment, and Renewable Energy, has taken a pivotal step in its commitment to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the transportation sector.
As part of the NDC–Tec project, implemented in collaboration with the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), the ministry received a state-of-the-art BYD Atto 3 electric vehicle (EV) on 9 January, during an official handover ceremony.
The transport sector, which contributes approximately 39% of Grenada’s total GHG emissions, remains a key focus of the country’s climate action. This initiative is a critical component of Grenada’s broader strategy to transition to sustainable, low-emission mobility solutions, in alignment with the Paris Agreement and its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).
In her remarks at the ceremony, Hon. Kerryne James, Minister for Climate Resilience, the Environment, and Renewable Energy, underscored the significance of advancing clean energy systems across all sectors in Grenada. “Today’s handover is not merely about acquiring a vehicle; it is a tangible step forward in our mission to create a sustainable future for Grenada. By embracing electric mobility, we are tackling one of the largest contributors to our carbon footprint and demonstrating leadership in climate resilience and innovation,” Minister James stated.
The ceremonial handing over of the keys to the electric vehicle was conducted by Marion Geiss, Head of GIZ Projects. In a symbolic first drive around the Ministerial Complex, Minister James was joined by Permanent Secretary Peron Johnson and Geiss, marking the vehicle’s official introduction.
The event was attended by key stakeholders, including Permanent Secretary Peron Johnson, Head of GIZ Projects Marion Geiss, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Transportation Alva Browne, Director of Renewable Energy Leslie Smith, and CEO of the Grenada Transport Commission David Bartholomew.
During the ceremony, Geiss highlighted the importance of partnership in achieving Grenada’s climate goals. “GIZ is proud to support Grenada in fostering sustainable transport systems. The introduction of this EV is a significant milestone in Grenada’s journey toward a greener, more resilient future,” she said.
The newly acquired 2024 model BYD Atto 3 will serve both the operational needs of the ministry and as a demonstration to public and private stakeholders of the benefits of electric mobility. This marks a critical first step in the broader plan to integrate EVs into the government fleet and promote widespread adoption of electric vehicles across the island.
Minister James concluded the event by reaffirming Grenada’s vision for a climate-resilient future. “Our vision is built on partnerships and shared responsibility. With initiatives like this, we are laying the groundwork for a cleaner, greener Grenada. Let this milestone inspire action across all sectors as we face the realities of climate change together,” she said.
The NDC–Tec project continues to play a vital role in advancing innovative solutions for Grenada’s transportation sector. Future phases of the project will focus on electric mobility in marine transportation, including the introduction of electric fishing boats and an electric patrol vessel for the Coast Guard.
