The British Government has announced the introduction of the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system, which will be required for Grenadians travelling to the United Kingdom, starting 8 January 2025.
This new measure applies to all nationals who previously did not need a visa to enter the UK. It is part of efforts to enhance border security by pre-registering travellers’ details and credentials before their arrival.
In a recent interview with Resident British High Commissioner Victor Clark it was emphasised that the ETA is not a visa and does not replace existing visa requirements. Individuals who previously needed a visa to enter the UK will still require one. The ETA is designed as a quick and streamlined online process, requiring applicants to have a valid passport and debit or credit card to complete the form.
The application process for the ETA takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. Applicants are required to provide contact details, passport information, upload a digital photograph, and answer a series of questions. These questions are similar to those found on a landing card and include details about the purpose of the visit and planned activities in the UK. Once submitted, the application is processed within 3 working days, although responses may be provided sooner, due to the automated nature of the system.
The ETA costs £10 and remains valid for 2 years. However, it is tied to the specific passport used during the application. If the passport expires within the 2-year period, the ETA will also expire, necessitating a new application with the new passport. Travellers can use the ETA multiple times for short stays, tourism, or business visits, provided these do not exceed 6 months. The ETA cannot be used for long-term stay or purposes outside of the stated categories.
High Commissioner Clark urged Grenadians to familiarise themselves with the process and apply well in advance of their travel date to ensure a smooth journey. While last-minute applications are allowed, there is no guarantee of receiving a response in time. Travellers are advised to submit their ETA applications at least one to 2 weeks before their departure.
It is important to note that having an ETA does not guarantee automatic entry into the UK. Standard border control checks will still apply upon arrival. If an ETA application is unsuccessful, travellers can apply for a visa, which involves a more detailed and rigorous process.
