The Government of Grenada will on Saturday, 17 August and Sunday, 18 August 2024, host ceremonies to honour the achievements and representation of all of the country’s participants in the just concluded Paris Olympics.
The nation’s 3 Olympic finalists — Anderson Peters, Kirani James, and Lindon Victor — will arrive home on Saturday.
The team will be greeted by government officials, sport associations’ executives and family members. Grenadians are invited to join the greeting party outside of the airport at 2 pm.
The weekend’s activities will also include a national motorcade on Sunday, 18 August and a recognition rally at the La Sagesse Playing Field.
The motorcade will begin at 9 am at Morne Rouge and head westward, passing through Gouyave, Kirani James’ hometown, down the east coast, including Soubise, Anderson Peters’ hometown. It will conclude at La Sagesse, the home parish of decathlete Lindon Victor.
Acting Minister for Sports Hon. Delma Thomas said, “The activities have been put in place to celebrate athletes who have brought glory and honour to our land.”
Minister Thomas urged citizens throughout Grenada to organise in their various communities to participate, especially in the events on Sunday. “Let’s get together and be part of the grandest welcome ever, as we celebrate Grenadian resilience and excellence,” she said.
According to Minister Thomas, some major announcements regarding the development of sports will be made at the La Sagesse rally.
Packages to honour all the Olympians — and not just the 3 finalists — will also be unveiled in a special address by Prime Minister Hon. Dickon Mitchell.
“Let this be a Grenadian moment, because it is,” Minister Thomas declared.
