The Education Collective Grenada (ECG), a volunteer educator network, delivered a Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) intensive training to teachers in District 3 during the week of 15 July.
The STEAM teacher intensive was created to act as an intervention programme that positively impacts student retention and reduces attrition rates in secondary schools. It was also designed to act as a bridge programme for secondary students who may prematurely reject tertiary learning experiences. All secondary learners, but especially students who are more susceptible to abandoning schools, are expected to benefit from the summer intensive.
The programme consists of 3 components:
- An immersive virtual teacher-intensive learning period
- A year-long mentorship
- Teaching in the ECG STEAM Summer Academy programme for secondary students
The first component of the programme was led by Dr Caroline Henry, ECG’s founder, and co-facilitated by ECG members Dr Salisa Allard-Blaisdell, Dr Lisa Francis-Charles, Dr Nadia Lopez, Dr Patricia Thomas, Dido Balla, and Sheri-Don Noel. Ethan Bailey, a senior student majoring in the STEAM field at Midwestern
State University in Wichita Falls, Texas, also guest-presented on the topic, “Connecting STEAM to College and Career.” Many ECG instructors have conducted research at the secondary and tertiary levels in Grenada and used their findings to inform the design and delivery of the programme.
The programme’s organisers will host a Certificate of Participation luncheon at the Seamon Conference Room at the Grenada Investment Development Corporation (GIDC), located in Frequente Industrial Park Road, Frequente, Grenada, on Monday, 22 July, from noon to 3:30 pm. Participants, stakeholders, and organisers will celebrate the accomplishment of this first milestone and reflect on the intensive learning period.
About the ECG:
The ECG network, which was launched in September 2022, includes Grenadians and friends of Grenada who design and deliver sustainable continuing education models and programmes to schools in Grenada. The ECG volunteers reside in Grenada, the Caribbean region, North America, and Europe.
The programme was sponsored by Campeche International Consultants Incorporated, a marketing research and analysis firm based in Grenada.
