- World Athletics automatic qualifying standard is 47.40 seconds
- Daniel clocked 46.86 seconds to claim victory at 2026 Classique Lighting Caribbean Communal Invitational
- Next opportunity to solidify standing is Whitsuntide Games, 23–24 May
The Under-20 Men’s 400m emerged as one of the highlights of the 2026 Classique Lighting Caribbean Communal Invitational on Saturday, as Darell Daniel produced a performance of international calibre.
Representing Altitude Track Academy, Daniel clocked 46.86 seconds to claim victory, positioning himself among the region’s elite quarter-milers for the 2026 season.
Daniel demonstrated superior race management from the onset, controlling the field through the first 200 metres before accelerating away on the home straight. While the time is a personal best and a major competitive milestone, its status as an official qualifier for the World Under-20 Championships in Eugene, Oregon, faces a technical hurdle.
The automatic qualifying standard set by World Athletics for the men’s 400m is 47.40 seconds. While Daniel bettered this mark by a significant 0.54-second margin, official ratification depends on the status of the meet.
According to World Athletics conditions for the validity of performances, results must be achieved at competitions organised or authorised by the governing body or its Area Associations (NACAC) or its member federations (GAA), and must be submitted in advance through the Global Calendar Platform.
A review of the current World Athletics Global Calendar indicates that the Classique Lighting Caribbean Communal Invitational is not currently listed as a ratified qualifying event. Consequently, while the performance establishes Daniel’s elite form, he may still need to replicate the time at a sanctioned meet to guarantee his spot on the national team.
The next opportunity for Daniel to solidify his standing is the Whitsuntide Games, scheduled for 23–24 May 2026. Unlike the recent invitational, the Whitsuntide Games are a mainstay on the regional calendar and are expected to be fully ratified for world ranking and qualification purposes.
The May meet is expected to provide a sterner test for Daniel, as he will face a diverse field of talent from Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, St Vincent and the Grenadines, and other regional federations. A consistent performance in May will be essential for the 18-year-old as he seeks to solidify his case for a place among the Grenadian contingent set to represent the spice isle in Oregon.
