The vibrant spirit of Grenada made itself comfortably at home in the heart of London on Saturday, 7 February as Grenadians and friends of Grenada gathered to celebrate the nation’s 52nd Anniversary of Independence in grand style.

The elegant Independence Gala, hosted by the United Groups of Grenada (UGG) under the auspices of the Grenada High Commission, was held at the Holiday Inn London, Brentford (West London), and delivered an evening rich in culture, camaraderie, and unmistakable national pride — proof that while Grenadians may live abroad, independence celebrations are never outsourced.

This year’s event once again underscored UGG’s continued dedication to uniting the Grenadian community in the UK through a meaningful and joyful commemoration of nationhood.

A night of inspiration and unity

The celebration was graced by Her Excellency Rachér Croney, High Commissioner for Grenada to the United Kingdom, who delivered an inspiring address highlighting Grenada’s resilience, progress, and enduring global presence. The Ambassador for Diaspora Affairs Terrence ‘Terry’ Forrester was also in attendance and not only spoke to the importance of diaspora engagement but also demonstrated — quite convincingly — that diplomacy and dancing are not mutually exclusive.

Adding to the evening’s significance, Prime Minister Hon. Dickon Mitchell shared a heartfelt recorded message, warmly received by attendees. In his address, the Prime Minister reflected on this year’s Independence theme: Grenada at 52: Anchored by Faith, Guided by Purpose. He highlighted the nation’s achievements over the past 5 decades and expressed sincere gratitude to Grenadians at home and abroad for their unwavering commitment to national development.

An evening to remember

The gala was a vibrant showcase of Grenadian culture and elegance. Guests were treated to live performances by a talented saxophonist and a steel band, setting a festive tone that quickly gave way to a lively dance floor. As the evening progressed, infectious rhythms of soca, reggae, and soul ensured that no one remained seated for long — unless strategically conserving energy.

Attendees also enjoyed a sumptuous Caribbean-inspired feast, offering flavours that transported many straight back to the Spice Isle — no passport required.

True to form, Grenadians once again confirmed their reputation as some of the most stylish people in the Caribbean. The evening doubled as an unofficial fashion showcase, with guests arriving in stunning attire that reflected both cultural pride and impeccable taste.

A celebration of community and legacy

More than an evening of entertainment, the gala served as a powerful reminder of Grenada’s unity, progress, and shared vision for the future. It was a moment to honour past achievements, embrace emerging opportunities, and reaffirm a collective commitment to a prosperous, inclusive, and thriving Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique.

As the night drew to a close, the spirit of togetherness lingered — reinforcing the enduring bonds that connect Grenadians across borders, oceans, and time zones. May God continue to bless Grenada and its people.
