The Grenada National Organisation of Women (GNOW), together with its affiliates and members, expresses profound sorrow and outrage at the tragic death of young Aleandra Lett Hypolite.
We extend our deepest condolences to her family, loved ones, and friends, and we join in mourning with her community and the wider tri-island state of Grenada, Carriacou, and Petite Martinique.
This brutal act of violence has shaken our nation to its core and serves as a painful reminder of the persistent threat of gender-based violence faced by women and girls, particularly when systems fail to adequately protect them from offenders. This incident underscores GNOW’s continued advocacy, clarion calls, and collaboration with stakeholders, policymakers, and frontline responders to strengthen awareness, prevention, and safety mechanisms to prevent the recurrence of such horrific crimes.
GNOW urges all citizens: If you see something that raises a red flag or causes alarm in your home or community, report it to your nearest police station at the earliest opportunity. Silence can cost lives. We all share a collective responsibility to save a life or someone’s future. GNOW demands swift and transparent justice for Aleandra’s family and calls for assurance that the perpetrator, and all perpetrators of violence against women and girls, are subjected to thorough investigations, appropriate punishment fitting the crime, and proper assessment and management of offenders at risk of re-offending.
To the women and girls of Grenada: remain strong, remain vigilant, protect yourselves where possible, look out for one another, and know that violence is never your fault. Have faith, hold onto hope, and know that your lives matter. You deserve safety, dignity, and peace. May Aleandra’s soul rest in peace. May her death not be in vain. Let this moment move us beyond words to decisive action.
