- Grenada can seek protection of marks in 131 Madrid System members
- One international trademark application filed in English and fees paid in Swiss francs
- Madrid Protocol will enter into force in Grenada on 15 March 2026
The Madrid Protocol will enter into force in Grenada on 15 March 2026, approximately 3 months after the Government of Grenada deposited its instrument of accession to the Madrid Protocol, the governing Treaty of the Madrid System.
Grenada is the 116th member of the Madrid System, and the 10th country from Latin America and the Caribbean to join. A statement on the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) website said, “Its accession further strengthens the Madrid System’s role as a practical and efficient solution for protecting trademarks worldwide.”
Starting 15 March 2026, businesses and entrepreneurs in Grenada which have registered or applied for a national trademark registration through Grenada’s Corporate Affairs and Intellectual Property Office (CAIPO), can seek protection of their marks in all 131 Madrid System members by filing one international trademark application, in English and paying a single set of fees, in one currency, Swiss francs.
Trademark holders in other Madrid System members will be able to designate Grenada in their international trademark applications, and existing international trademark registration holders can expand protection to include Grenada.
In February 2025, several stakeholders who will be directly affected when Grenada becomes a signatory to the Madrid Protocol had the opportunity to learn more about this international trademark agreement with representatives from WIPO.
Two high-level experts from the organisation recently met with stakeholders to prepare Grenada’s move to introduce the Madrid Protocol through CAIPO.
Senator Claudette Joseph, during the 2026 budget debate, informed the Senate that Grenada became a signatory to the Madrid Protocol on 10 December 2025, with the aim of bringing it into effect in Grenada on 1 April 2026.
