The National Water and Sewerage Authority (Nawasa) advises the public that ongoing pipe-laying works in the Grand Anse area, in the vicinity of Excel Plaza, under the UKCIF Southern St George’s Water Supply Expansion Project, have resulted in a major sewer main breach.
This critical line conveys sewage from the Morne Rouge catchment to the Maurice Bishop Highway.
As a result of the breach, sewage generated from 3 of Nawasa’s 4 pump stations on the Grand Anse system is currently leaking into the environment. Nawasa has already mobilised resources to carry out emergency repairs, with the goal of minimising the impact of the discharge.
Environmental and public health measures
To address the situation:
- Water trucks will be deployed to sanitise affected roads and drains
- Residents and businesses in the Morne Rouge vicinity may experience unpleasant odours during this period
Nawasa sincerely apologises for the inconvenience and assures the public that every effort is being made to resolve the issue as swiftly as possible.
Project impact
As a result of this, the planned works in the Green Bridge area will be temporarily halted, as all available resources are being redirected to address this critical sewer main issue.

Traffic Inconvenience
Under the UKCIF Project, contractors have been working nightly from 8 pm to 4 am to minimise traffic disruptions. However, due to this unforeseen incident, traffic diversions will be in effect during the period of repairs.
Motorists travelling from the Maurice Bishop Highway onto the Grand Anse Main Road in a northerly direction will be diverted through Mount Toute and will rejoin the roadway at the Grand Anse traffic light between the hours of 7 am and 1 pm.
All other traffic arrangements will remain unchanged. Nawasa thanks the Royal Grenada Police Force for their swift response in implementing an enforced traffic management plan to help ease congestion.
Nawasa remains committed to safeguarding the health and convenience of the public while advancing the timely completion of vital infrastructure works. Further updates will be provided during the course of the day as progress continues.
