The Grenada Football Association (GFA) successfully concluded its 2025 Summer of Soccer Program on Thursday, 28 August, with a spectacular national closing event at the Kirani James Athletics Stadium.

The grand finale brought together approximately 800 boys and girls from football centres across the tri-island state for a morning of football fun, mini-tournaments, and celebration.

This year’s programme, held 7–31 July and 18–28 August, reached a remarkable milestone, engaging boys and girls aged 6 to 16 across all parishes and Carriacou. Sessions were hosted 4 days a week, with children receiving expert coaching in football fundamentals such as passing, dribbling, shooting, and teamwork in a fun, safe, and inclusive environment. Participation was completely free of charge to ensure access for all.

“This year’s turnout was successful and is a testament to what is possible when community, vision, and opportunity come together,” said GFA President Marlon Glean. “By investing in grassroots football, we are not only developing technical talent, but we are also instilling discipline, teamwork, and a love for the game that will serve these children for life. This is how we build the future of Grenadian football, but more importantly, the future of Grenadian society,” he continued.

Programme objectives and impact

The Summer of Soccer is a key pillar of the GFA’s Grassroots Development Strategy, aimed at:

  • Increasing youth participation in football at a national level
  • Providing structured training led by certified coaches and youth mentors
  • Fostering social inclusion, teamwork, and positive values
  • Identifying emerging talent for youth national teams
  • Building momentum for the sustainable growth of football, both domestically and internationally

With a team of 40 licensed coaches, coordinators, and volunteers, each centre was properly managed to ensure high standards in coaching and child welfare across the island.

“We have seen tremendous growth, not just in technical skills, but in character and confidence over the course of the program,” said Alister Fleming, Technical Director, GFA.“This programme is about more than football. It is about giving every child a chance to have fun, develop a sense of belonging and to dream big. The energy and joy on display at the national closing event were proof that we are on the right path,” he continued.

A joyous culmination

At the closing event on 28 August, children were welcomed with breakfast at 9 am, followed by football showcases, friendly matches on small-sided fields, and fun activities designed to celebrate their progress. The event underscored the spirit of unity and excitement that the Summer of Soccer fosters among families, communities, and the future generation of footballers.
