Grenada’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Honourable Joseph Andall participated in the 70th Meeting of the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG) in New York City on Sunday, 21 September 2025, on the sidelines of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
The meeting was chaired by the Honourable Dr Ian Borg, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism of Malta, and brought together foreign ministers and representatives from Antigua and Barbuda, Botswana, Canada, Grenada, Malaysia, Mauritius, Samoa, and Zambia.
CMAG, established in 1995, serves as the guardian of the Commonwealth’s core political values, including democracy, human rights, and the rule of law. The group reviewed developments in member states, reaffirmed its commitment to the Commonwealth Charter, and welcomed updates from the Secretary-General on her Good Offices engagements.
Minister Andall joined his counterparts in commending the Gabonese Republic on its progress toward legislative and local elections, following the lifting of its partial suspension. He also supported the group’s unwavering endorsement of Guyana’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and its engagement with the International Court of Justice.
The meeting also addressed broader concerns about pressures on democracy and human rights across the Commonwealth and emphasised the importance of continued support for the Secretariat’s work in strengthening institutions and promoting peace and good governance.
The next CMAG meeting is scheduled to take place in London in March 2026, during Commonwealth Week.
