On 20 June 2025, Prime Minister the Honourable Dickon Mitchell welcomed Khaled El -Enany, Egypt’s candidate for the position of Director-General of UNESCO, during a courtesy call aimed at strengthening cultural and diplomatic ties.
El-Enany, a former Minister of Tourism and Antiquities of Egypt, shared his vision for UNESCO, emphasising the importance of serving as a cultural bridge, fostering consensus through depoliticised technical deliberations, and reinforcing dialogue with UNESCO’s Governing Bodies.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Mitchell raised key issues of national and global concern, including:
- Climate Change and Climate Financing: Highlighting the urgent need for equitable access to climate finance for small island developing states (SIDS) like Grenada
- Cultural Preservation: Advocating for the protection of Grenada’s built heritage and intangible cultural practices, and the importance of international collaboration in safeguarding these assets
El-Enany expressed his willingness to collaborate with the Government of Grenada on a range of initiatives, including:
- Tourism Development: Exploring strategies to increase visitor arrivals and enhance the tourism experience
- Education and Training: Supporting capacity-building in the hospitality sector through education and vocational training
Both parties also exchanged insights on the intersection of tourism and cultural preservation, drawing on El-Enany’s extensive experience in heritage management and sustainable tourism.
This engagement reflects Grenada’s ongoing commitment to multilateral cooperation and cultural diplomacy, as well as its support for leadership that prioritises inclusivity, heritage, and sustainable development.
