Work has begun on the Grenada Wastewater Treatment and Recycling Project at the Princess Alice Hospital, Mirabeau, St Andrew.
On Wednesday, 19 February, consultants from Pure Water International and officials from the Windward Islands Research and Education Foundation (WINDREF) and the Ministry of Health witnessed preparations for installing a tertiary treatment septic tank and the equipment containing Activated Filtration Media (AFM) for the treatment of wastewater.
Doctor Lindonna Telesford, from WINDREF, highlighted the benefit of the project for environmental protection but more so as a climate change adaptation measure.
“The project has a livelihood component, which would see the recycling of wastewater for non-domestic uses. The project is transformative for Grenada, being the first of its kind to be installed in the country and the health sector in the Caribbean region,” noted Dr Telesford.
The project is funded by the Caribbean Development Bank, the Government of Grenada, Nawasa, and WINDREF.
