The Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) has reaffirmed its commitment to Grenada’s agricultural recovery by donating approximately 48 kilograms of high-quality fruit and vegetable seeds to the Ministry of Agriculture.
This latest contribution builds upon IICA’s ongoing support for the sector following the devastation caused by Hurricane Beryl in July 2024.
The donation — made possible through the IICA Representation in Chile — includes seeds for essential crops such as corn, cabbage, lettuce, pumpkin, zucchini, beets, and watermelon, among others. Representing IICA at the handover was Gregory Delsol, Technical Specialist, IICA Grenada Delegation, who emphasised the organisation’s dedication to strengthening Grenada’s food and nutrition security.
Receiving the seeds on behalf of the ministry were Permanent Secretary Isaac Bhagwan, and Chief Agriculture Officer (Ag.) Thaddeus Peters. Both officials expressed their deep appreciation to IICA for its continued support and commitment to the agricultural sector.
CAO Peters noted that the seeds appear to be of excellent quality and have the potential to significantly enhance local vegetable production — an essential step toward improving national food security. Permanent Secretary Bhagwan highlighted that seed provision was a key request from the ministry, and he was pleased to see IICA delivering on this crucial need.
This donation follows IICA’s December 2024 initiative, where the organisation provided 1,400 chicks (700 layers, 700 broilers) and 672 bags of feed to 14 farmers, including 6 from the sister isle of Carriacou. Additionally, in collaboration with the Ministry and Grenada Chick Inn Farm Ltd., IICA supported the agriculture programmes of 8 schools by supplying 600 chicks (300 layers, 300 broilers) and 300 bags of feed.
Through these strategic interventions and strong partnerships, IICA continues to play an important role in strengthening Grenada’s agricultural resilience, ensuring food security, and improving the livelihoods of farmers and stakeholders across the sector.
