A Tribute to Lyden Ramdhanny

The news of the passing of Lyden Ramdhanny has unleashed a mixture of sorrow, pride, and gratitude in recollecting his life, example, and accomplishments.

As I reflect on the days we walked side by side during the People’s Revolutionary Government, my heart overflows with both a deep sadness at his passing and an unshakeable pride in the life he lived in service to Grenada.

In those momentous years of the Revolution, when hope burned bright and the horizons of possibility seemed infinite, Lyden stood at the crossroads of government and private enterprise — a veritable bridge navigating the imperatives of social equity and individual entrepreneurship, helping to define and exemplify how private business can exercise social responsibility and creating space within which local business can prosper as a productive sector adding value rather than simply being a predatory distributive sector. He believed in the promise of a Grenada shaped not only by visionary policy but also by the determined efforts of its local business community. As a minister in the People’s Revolutionary Government, Lyden embodied the spirited energy of the movement: working tirelessly to uplift the common person, ensuring that every dream — from our grandest social programs down to the humblest entrepreneurial ventures — could find fertile ground on this blessed soil.

Many may recall him first as the innovative businessman, a leading figure in the private sector, whose ventures brought commerce, employment, and opportunity to our shores. I, however, will forever remember him for his open heart, his sincerity, and his unyielding belief that Grenada could — and indeed should — stand proud in the eyes of the world. In committee rooms and community halls, Lyden’s voice rang out with an unmistakable blend of passion, compassion, and practicality. He was unafraid to challenge us to dream bigger, to be better, to serve our people with renewed dedication.

During those crucial days when I served as Permanent Secretary and Chief Education Officer, I witnessed firsthand his unwavering commitment to education. Lyden knew that the promise of the Revolution was founded upon educating the nation’s people, widening their horizons so they could carry Grenada forward. His readiness to fund scholarship initiatives, support vocational training, and champion adult literacy programmes laid the bedrock for countless success stories in later years. He carried that same zeal beyond 1983, continuing to invest in our youth, determined that no ambition would go unrealized for want of opportunity.

Beyond the arena of public service, Lyden remained a constant source of light for our communities. His philanthropic work spoke volumes about his gentle heart and boundless love for the people of Grenada. Many have spoken to me about how he would quietly step in to help, expecting no recognition, only urging the beneficiaries to “pay it forward” when they could. He understood that nation-building was not confined to ministers and officials but belonged to each and every citizen — if only we had the courage to act.

To those who grieve today — his family, loved ones, friends, and the many Grenadians who admired and respected him — I extend my deepest sympathies. Remember him as I do: that determined figure on the front lines of nation-building, that comforting presence in times of crisis, the gentle voice encouraging us to seek unity over division. Let us honour him by carrying forward his ideals of service, compassion, and unwavering belief in the destiny of Grenada.

Lyden’s life reminds us that no dream for Grenada is too grand if we put our hearts and hands together. Though the Revolution’s flame burned briefly in history’s grand reckoning, its spark remains in every individual who continues to work for the common good. Lyden Ramdhanny kept that spark alive through his actions and his love for this island, preserving our dignity and pride as a people.

Today, we mourn a friend, a colleague, and a true patriot. Yet, in our grief, let us also find new resolve to build on the foundations he helped lay. The best tribute we can give Lyden is to carry forth his vision — to be bold in our pursuit of national development, steadfast in our pursuit of social justice, and unbreakable in our commitment to each other.

Rest in peace, my brother Lyden. May your legacy continue to guide us toward a brighter, kinder, and more prosperous Grenada.
