- Peter David, MP for Town of St George, resigned on Monday, 20 January 2025
- NNP won 6 seats after general elections in June 2022
- David joined NNP in 2014 after he was expelled from NDC in 2012
There is a further reduction to the number of Members of Parliament (MPs) associating themselves with the main opposition New National Party (NNP) in the Lower House of Parliament. After the June 2022 General Election, the party won 6 seats, but 2 years and 7 months later, the party now has 4 seats.
The first to resign was Delma Thomas, MP for the constituency of St Andrew North West. She crossed the floor and joined the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), increasing its seats in the House of Representatives to 10.
The latest MP to resign from the NNP is Peter David, MP for the Town of St George. David resigned from the party effective today, Monday, 20 January 2025.
“The New National Party acknowledges the resignation of Hon. Peter David, the Member of Parliament for the Town of St George from the party on Monday, 20 January 2025,” said a statement from the NNP Public Relations team. “We extend our gratitude to Hon. David for his years of service to the NNP,” said the statement disseminated via a social media platform. Quoting Political Leader Emmalin Pierre as wishing all the best in his endeavour, the statement said that the party remains steadfast in its mission to serve the constituency of the Town of St George and Grenada in general.
David’s resignation comes a little over a month after the NNP held its convention and elected a new executive. David was among 2 vying for leadership, but he withdrew from the race hours before the 15 December 2024 convention. He claimed that the internal election process was rigged to benefit Emmalin Pierre, his competition. “They have built a barricade for the way forward. Their divisive machinations have left me with little option but to withdraw myself from tomorrow’s proceedings, as a delegate or even an observer,” he said in an address broadcast via his Facebook page on the evening of 14 December.
“Democracy’s time has come. Decency’s time has come. Honesty’s time has come. I say to you — tonight is not the end of anything. It is the beginning of everything,” he said in the address as he thanked the cross-section of Grenadians who have been encouraging him through the many months, weeks, and especially in recent days, to not abandon his leadership campaign.
David joined the NNP in 2014 after he was expelled from the NDC in 2012. In 2003, he became the Member of Parliament for the Town of St George with 1,280 votes and won the seat again in 2008 with 1,445 votes, followed by 1,615 votes in 2018, and 1,329 votes in the 2022 General Election.
