- Grenada Constitution guarantees fundamental rights to freedom of expression and association
- Pierre claims several people are having their constitutional rights violated
- Newly elected youth executive has pledged to focus on youth empowerment, innovation, and engagement
Emmalin Pierre, recently elected Political Leader of the New National Party (NNP) is of the view that several people’s constitutional rights are being infringed by certain representatives of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The Grenada Constitution guarantees fundamental rights to freedom of expression and association, and Pierre claims that since the NDC government which was elected in June 2022 took over the administration of the country, several people have had their constitutional rights violated.
“Where is the freedom of expression that we had and knew before? Where is the freedom of association that existed before 2022? I say to you, young people do not allow yourself to be bullied, do not allow your constitutional right to be trampled upon, stand up for your rights,” she said while addressing the NNP Youth Convention on Sunday which was broadcast live on social media platforms. “If you are bullied and you are victimised because you have chosen to support the NNP, I say stand up and fight back; you have nothing to lose. It is okay to respectfully disagree; it is okay to respectfully state your rights, and it’s okay to say to those in authority that they are infringing on your rights. Whatever you do, do it respectfully but do not allow anyone to bully you.”
The main outcome of the convention held at the Westerhall Secondary School was the election of a new national youth arm executive.
