Farmers can expect to soon see the realisation of new breeds of sheep and goats being introduced to Carriacou and Petite Martinique, as part of the implementation of the “Grenada Food Security and Enhancement Project” — a World Bank-funded agriculture project.
In preparation for the start of the project, a new sheep house is under construction, with a more modern structure to be done later this year, said Benson Patrice, Senior Agriculture Officer within the Ministry of Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs and Local Government.
He highlighted an overall plan for the Limlair Farm Development Project, under which farmers would obtain new livestock and gain more training.
New pastures are being developed close to the Limlair Farm to prepare for 100 sheep and goats expected later this year. Patrice said the pastures will be planted with drought-resistant grass, which will also be shared with livestock farmers.
Meanwhile, to aid in the further development of the poultry industry, a training is planned for next Tuesday, 5 March. The poultry farmers’ training will be held at the Carriacou Multipurpose Centre.
