A collaboration between the HEON Project Grenada and the Writers Association of Grenada (WAG) has turned pens, papers, and brushes into instruments of empowerment.

These two associations have joined forces to host a Creative Writing Poetry Workshop titled ‘Speak and Listen!’.

The two workshops were held on 25 November and 9 December, where more than 50 young women, age 14–25, harnessed their unique skills to learn, raise awareness, and inspire change.

It was a gathering that not only saw art enthusiasts but also advocates and creatives who delved into the profound complexities of gender-based violence and family violence during a presentation by Seville Francis, a mental health coach.

Also on the agenda were 2 sessions — one for individuals interested in art and the other for those intrigued by creative writing. Facilitating the creative writing session was Liz Hamlet, a poet and art teacher.

Jenella Edwards, President/Founder of the HEON Project Grenada, reflected on the impact of the workshops. “As participants explored the intricacies of gender-based violence, many were taken aback by the realisation that its repercussions extended beyond the physical realm. Childhood memories resurfaced, unveiling instances where they had actually witnessed abuse. Now, armed with newfound knowledge and creative expression, they vowed to use their voices as instruments of change.”

Participants came from various communities and some from the schools, including T A Marryshow Community College (TAMCC), Grenada SDAA Comprehensive School, St Mark’s Secondary School, St David’s Catholic Secondary School, Westerhall Secondary School and St Joseph’s Convent St George.

These workshops were funded and supported by UN Women through the Grenada Spotlight Initiative to End Violence Against Women and Girls. The HEON Project Grenada, a non-profit, non-political initiative, is working to empower young people through education and skills development. The Writers Association of Grenada provides space for individuals who wish to highlight the numerous societal challenges, as showcased in their Voices Series. This project responds to the urgent need for awareness, understanding, and advocacy surrounding Violence against Women and Girls, as well as Family Violence in Grenada.
