The Caribbean region, known for its stunning landscapes, often experiences soil erosion due to its unique geography.
Soil erosion occurs when natural forces such as wind and water displace the topsoil, degrading its quality and posing various ecological and economic consequences.
The effects of soil erosion are far-reaching, including reduced agricultural productivity, water pollution, increased flooding, and habitat destruction. Climate change-induced events like intense rainfall and hurricanes can further exacerbate the problem, leading to even greater soil loss. It is, therefore, crucial to acknowledge these factors and take proactive steps to prevent and mitigate soil erosion.
In tackling this challenge on our construction site in Grenada, we have implemented a simple yet incredibly effective solution: planting Vetiver grass. Vetiver grass (Chrysopogon zizanioides) is a versatile, fast-growing, and deep-rooted plant that has proven to be highly effective as a natural barrier against erosion by reducing the velocity of water runoff and trapping sediment. Its extensive and fibrous root system binds the soil and increases its overall stability. This unique characteristic makes this plant a great solution even on steep slopes, which experience heavy rainfall and have varying terrain. The grass also enhances soil fertility, promotes groundwater recharge, and supports biodiversity by providing habitat for various organisms, making it an ideal choice for long-term preservation of the region’s delicate ecosystem.
Beyond its numerous environmental benefits, the incorporation of Vetiver grass throughout the property of the highly anticipated Six Senses La Sagesse Grenada resort adds an exquisite dimension. Once the resort opens later this year, this remarkably versatile plant will seamlessly enhance the renowned Six Senses Spa experience. Known for its healing and cooling properties, it offers a wide array of uses in skincare and haircare treatments. Its invigorating scent has a profound rejuvenating effect and the plant’s natural properties create a serene ambiance that will provide the spa guests with a truly blissful retreat. Something to look forward to!

You wouldn’t need to plant Vetiver had you not DESTROYED La Sagesse by clear cutting and removing the lady’s mountain at the opening to the Bay. You have also altered the weather patterns by removing all the vegetation and the earth. You make me sick. You DESTROYED the MOST SERENE place on the island with your bleeping concrete buildings and greed. Salt pond gone which preserved the lands with the Mangroves you were NOT supposed to be able to remove. All the environment sacrificed for money that will NEVER benefit the locals. What a farce to applaud yourselves for planting back grasses where the native and natural trees and shrubs should still be intact. Shame on you. I pray that Karma seeks you out for what you have done.
Eco Strategies Grenada Inc. is presently engaged on a project funded by the UNDP GEF SGP to encourage increased use of the Vetiver System for erosion & other land degradation issues. Bare-rooted young vetiver plants (slips) are being produced for distribution to registered farmers, who can apply at [email protected].

Erosion and land degradation only occur when man intervenes. You should be acknowledging the damage being done to the environment of Grenada by all of the coastal “development” that in truth is contributing to the issue of Global warming by destroying the natural environment and replacing it with concrete and “landscaping” that don’t serve nature or people. Eco Strategies Grenada Inc. I question your education and also your intentions in any development where you give a pass on environmental destruction and your acceptance. You increase flooding by replacing nature with hard surfaces like concrete. You increase erosion by clear cutting ancient forest. I guess money talks.
