A number of teachers and district IT officers in Grenada have been exposed to training in Augmented Reality as part of efforts to improve their capacity in technology integration in the OECS education system.

The training, which was facilitated by the Ministry of Education, Youth, Sports, and Culture, in collaboration with the OECS Digital Education Capacity Strengthening Initiative (DECI), was held at PB’s Enterprise, Grenville, St Andrew on 20 and 21 March.

Facilitator Kendell Daniel, CEO and co-founder of E-Learning Kings, says an advantage of augmented reality is that it allows one to replace physical objects with 3-D objects. “Our hope is that teachers would be able to use more of the modern technology that is available, such as AR, and the district IT officers, they would be in charge of continuous training of the different teachers throughout Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique.”

DECI Focal Point Kwame Hypolite is satisfied with what the workshop has accomplished. “The level of engagement by the participants…it just augers well for what is to come in the pilot phase of this programme.”

Some participating teachers and district IT officers said they feel empowered following the session and are eager to take what they have learnt back to the classroom.

As part of this initiative, the St Mary’s Catholic School, which is the pilot school in the project, will receive a set of 20 tablets and cases, for the benefit of students in Grades K-3, within the pilot.

My view and opinion is that currently we have too many trainees working in our schools which is not helping the students but making the teachers lazy and laud back.
