30 June is potential date for re-opening Grenada’s borders

Prime Minister, Dr the Right Honourable Keith Mitchell, has identified 30 June 2020 as the possible date for re-opening the country’s borders after 2 months of lockdown to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

During appearances on various media platforms this week, Dr Mitchell said 30 June is being considered as a practical option but the actual date, will depend on all the necessary protocols being in place.

The National Covid-19 Committee and the Tourism Sub-Committee of the Task Force for Rebuilding the Grenadian Economy are currently working with stakeholders in the tourism industry, in preparation for the re-opening.

Dr Mitchell said, “There are a number of protocols that have to be agreed upon and instituted before the borders can re-open. We are working collaboratively with stakeholders to determine what conditions must be in place before we allow persons to enter the country. One such condition is ensuring that all hotels have appropriate sanitisation and other systems in place. We cannot open the borders if only 1 or 2 hotels are ready. There must be uniformity of practices as we continue to safeguard public health and safety.”

Dr Mitchell said it has been suggested that Grenadians currently stuck in foreign countries due to the closure of borders, can use the chartered flight option to get home sooner. Chartered flights, he said, will pose less of a challenge than commercial flights and may therefore be accommodated before the end of June, once all other recommended protocols and testing systems are in place.

Dr Mitchell also said, “When the borders are open, there will be no distinction between regional and international travellers. We are working at the level of the OECS and Caricom to ensure we put systems in place that are satisfactory to all countries.”

Some regional countries have stated their intention to re-open borders in early June, but Dr Mitchell said with all the protocols to be put in place, it is not practical for Grenada to do so, therefore 30 June is the current target date.

The Prime Minister has repeatedly stated that while economic activity must resume, public health and safety are of paramount importance.

May I advise all here and on my beloved home island to first of all calm down? And second to please look at a future beyond end of month to determine the rest of their lives, since that’s what this is? Before you take the step of potentially allowing COVID into a country that has blessedly been free from it (by comparison), think very, very hard. You have a jewel in your hand, mighty Grenada. Don’t use it to wipe your butt, please. Protect it. Because if you think “tourism” is going to spring bck like a Slinky, let me tell you that most Americans won’t even go to a movie theater, so good luck getting them on an airplane or cruise ship. What Grenadians do now will determine what Grenada will be like in twenty years. Be careful, please.

Is there something more to this continued (unsure of when we’ll reopen) shutdown than meets the eye. Other airports are opening but still the PM of Grenada is holding nationals hostage, and then giving a remedy (chartered plane) as a way out. Who’s really benefiting from all of this. Safety for all is of major importance, cleanup and preparation could have been done during the downtime and continue. The majority of the hostages aren’t benefiting from this unsure reopening, so who are getting the benefits.

More BS from idiot politicians who dont give a shit about how their senseless autocratic edicts are hurting ordinary people. People have lost their jobs while locked down in Grenada for over two months to flatten a non existent curve. Open the damn Airport and let visitors to Grenada leave and get back to their jobs if they are still lucky to have one.. This senseless BS has gone on long enough.

what are the plans for the people on the island who have not been able to return home? Will the government give permission for departure flights for these people to leave the island and head back to their families and jobs?

As i understand the necessary precautions , what about the people that have been on the island that needs to head back? Wheter it may be the UK or the US or any other country? What are these folks suppose to do as they have already been here pass 2 months? Are there anything put into place for these people to head back to their jobs and their families before the official opening of the border?
