The Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation reaffirms that the borders of Grenada remain closed to all incoming passenger traffic.
You would recall that the Maurice Bishop International Airport (MBIA) was closed in March and all approved traffic since then, have been cargo flights bringing in goods and medical supplies; repatriation flights to return persons from Grenada to their respective home countries and medical evacuations, as announced previously.
The closure of the airport is in keeping with government’s decision to protect public health and safety during this pandemic. As you would recall, all confirmed cases of Covid-19 recorded in Grenada were imported or import-related. Therefore, the MBIA will remain closed to all incoming passenger traffic until such time that the government is reassured that it is safe to re-open.
The level of misinformation that continues to be prevalent, especially in this period of crisis and heightened public sensitivity, is quite alarming. We cannot be expected to refute each reported inaccuracy, but in this case, it is important to reassure the citizens of Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique that government continues to put the interests of this country and its people first.
Therefore, to reiterate, there will be no resumption of flights until government makes an informed decision based on the advice of the health experts. We have done an excellent job over the last few weeks, managing the potential spread of the virus and safeguarding public health and safety. No decisions will be taken that will endanger the lives of our people.
The economic impact of the pandemic is quite widespread and although many are eager to reclaim some sense of normalcy, actions cannot be premature and consequences must be thoroughly examined. While we look forward to working with our international carriers and partners on making the tourism industry thrive again, as a government, we still maintain a very cautious approach, with respect to the resumption of business.
The ministry can confirm that a request was received from American Airlines to resume service to Grenada on 7 May 2020, if the restrictions imposed as a result of the State of Emergency are lifted. While the correspondence was acknowledged by the relevant authorities, there was no approval of the request because quite frankly, any deliberation on the resumption of incoming passenger traffic, is premature at this point.
Again, the ministry assures the population that no approval has been granted for the operation of any passenger flight, from any origin, for any date in the near future. The re-opening of Grenada’s borders will be done only after broad-based consultation and on the advice of medical experts. Any announcement of this will come from an official government source.

I hope the closure applies to all ways of arriving to the country and not just by air. Remember there are sailors who arrive in Grenada this time of year every year.

I have been following the Global mapping and trend of COVID-19 in Grenada. As a Research Analysts and Health Care Provider, here are my thoughts to Our Medical Team and the Grenada’s Government.
One person who contracts the Coronavirus has the potential to affect 2.5 persons, these 3 affects 9. Grenada’s trend is that pattern I am following. 1-4-9-10-12-14 Cases and no Deaths. If Grenada reaches a Cap of 21 Cases- no deaths- plateau-Curve flattened for three days, Extend the Lock down for two more weeks. Only then should the embargo of limited Emergency flights should be allowed to Grenada. Grenada must have the necessary tool to test for any one who disembark on the Island and to find out from every passenger of their last travel for the last six weeks. Any passengers who test positive, must return back to their Home Land and Not be quarantined on the Island of Grenada. Grenadians and Grenada does not have the Coronavirus. It was imported from the UK that is heavily endowed both territory and residents. Please note that China and India juxtapose each other. China is plastered with 5G, India has No 5G. Compare the Cases and deaths in both Countries. Grenada must take a page out of India’s History and Never sign up for 5G.
I do not have a problem with extended curfew but we must be able to access more than grocery stores and banks. Hurricane season will soon be here. I must find a worker to check my roof before that time and I will need hardware supplies to ensure that my house is as safe as possible. Do I need to obtain a pass for a day labourer to sort my roof?
How about self isolation 14 days before you depart? Then it doesnt matter if your destination trip is for 1 day or 1 month. But as with all of this there is no one size fits all and certainly depends on a measure of honesty to remain isolated.
It’s quite right that the borders remains closed until there is clear evidence of a reduction in infections elsewhere. The efforts made by the Grenadian Government to keep a lid on this devastation infection would for nought if flights were resumed to soon, especially with the situation in the US what it is. The Government should stand its ground and not be bullied and pressurised by AA or other carriers to resume flights. We all want to return to UK/US and loved ones but let’s think of the greater good this time round. Shopping is not that important in the grand scale of things!

That’s an idea Richard, The problem is that we have a huge number of “short term” visitors. should we only accept visitors who are prepared to remain on island beyond the 14 day isolation period?.
Currently, the accuracy of the so called rapid detection test for Covid -19 is beyond the allowed tolerance to be used as a guide.
What about allowing UK repatriation flights for those who have had BA cancel 3 times so far? No need for anyone to disembark in Grenada just pick up and go. Some kind of statement would be appreciated.
On the other side of the coin so far so good, the Draconian restrictions have been productive and should be commended but please open up all shops, let people out as in the first curfew, it’ll make such a difference but people must adhere to distancing & face covering.

What are the Governments thoughts on how to protect the island when the airport and ports do open again? Only do so when there is a test which can be applied to all entering the island? Compulsory isolation for 2 weeks in pre determined hotels and testing? Realise this is ahead but what are the thoughts? Secondary phase could be the real phase?
