Food Handlers Training Programme 2017

Grenadians who are interested in becoming certified food-handlers will have an opportunity to enroll in the Ministry of Health /PAHO-HACCP certification programme.

The ministry’s annual food-handlers training programme, which covers 9 modules, is expected to start Wednesday 4 July 2017 at the environmental health office upstairs the new vegetables market in Grenville, St Andrew. Francis Balwant, the senior environmental health officer who heads the operations at St Andrew, confirmed to the GIS that the training is only intended for new persons that are interested in becoming certified food-handlers, and not existing food-handlers. Training sessions in Grenville continue on 11 and 13 of July.

The training will cover the following topics:

  1. Introduction to food safety
  2. Personal hygiene
  3. Purchasing and Receiving
  4. Safe food storage practices
  5. Safe reheating thawing and freezing
  6. Cleaning and Sanitation
  7. Vector Control
  8. Food Safety Legislation
  9. Introduction to Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP).

Training in St David will take place 17 – 19 July at La Sagesse Natural Works, and in St Patrick 25-27 July, at the St Patrick’s Roman Catholic School in Sauteurs. All the training sessions begins at 1:30:pm sharp.

The objective of the training exercise is to impact knowledge to food handlers on approved methods of preparation and vending of foods for human consumption.

The training will include, lectures via power point presentations, interactive sessions, handouts and evaluation. On completion of the 9 modules, participants would be expected to prepare and offer foods that are safe for human consumption, in accordance with HACCP standards, and to prevent and control the occurrences of food borne illnesses among consumers.
