Sixteen Grade 3 students from 6 primary schools across Grenada will face each other in the final of the Grenada Diabetes Association’s (GDA) National Diabetes Primary School Quiz next week.
The competition will take place at the Grenada Youth Centre on Wednesday, 5 July 2023, from 9 am.
The quiz, which is in its inaugural year, is designed to inform, educate and empower students at a young age, so that they become aware of the harmful effects of diabetes.
Organisers believe if the children are exposed to information and education on diabetes from such an early stage, they will make better, healthier choices, and the rate of diabetes and other chronic lifestyle diseases will decrease in years to come.
Secretary to the GDA Nurse Kathyann Mitchell-Victor, Family Nurse Practitioner at the St George’s Health Centre said the top 16 students were drawn from the schools St George’s Seventh Day Adventist, St Patrick’s Roman Catholic, St John’s Anglican, St Paul’s Government, Telescope Primary and St Giles Anglican in St Andrew.
Mitchell-Victor, who is the focal point for the competition, commended the schools, students, teachers and parents who provided the support needed to adequately prepare the children for the competition.
The competition has also received support from some members of the local business community.
The national diabetes quiz is expected to be an annual feature on the GDA’s calendar of activities in observance of World Diabetes Day.
