The first Carnival City activity showcasing and featuring calypsonians and soca artistes will be on 12 June, and not today, as originally planned.
Carnival City is used to start building the carnival spirit, as Grenada prepares to celebrate carnival which climaxes the second Monday and Tuesday in August. This year, the city is a joint effort of the Spicemas Corporation (SMC) and MegaForce Promotion. Wayne Redhead of MegaForce Promotion said that the date had to be changed, because a special 100 X 40 tent with a special flooring, under which all the activities will be taking place, has not arrived in time. The car park of the Public Workers Union building is this year’s venue for Carnival City.
Culture Minister Brenda Hood said that weekly activities will provide opportunity for all carnival stakeholders to showcase their aspect of our culture. Alister Bain, chairman of SMC said, “It will be more fun as we bring out the best at Carnival City, it will be an opportunity especially for our local artistes.” Redhead said the first event will be a grand show featuring local and regional acts.
Hood also announced that calypsonians and soca artistes who are interesting in participating in the various carnival competitions for 2014, will begin registering at the SMC office on 10 June. The annual judges’ workshop which will be facilitated by person or persons from Trinidad will be held mid-June.
