GrenVet Island Veterinary Services (GIVS), a nonprofit charity group in Grenada and the United States, carried out a very successful community outreach mission in Grenada this past week.

For the last 5 years, GrenVet has provided sponsored spay, neuter, and wellness clinics for farmers and pet owners in need in Grenada. To date, over 700 dogs, cats, sheep, goats, and pigs have been examined, vaccinated, and treated for diseases ranging from simple skin infections and tick-borne illnesses to an emergency tail amputation.

In 2016 GIVS also launched a pilot programme to provide computers and improve the wi-fi infrastructure in schools. Dr Heather Douglas, director of GIVS had the idea to start the Grenadian Youth Technology Improvement Programme as her father was a computer programmer. This pilot programme has successfully resulted in 3 computer labs at Mt Rose Comprehensive Seventh Day Adventist School, St David’s Catholic Secondary School and Happy Hill Primary School to date.

This year, 20 new workstations were provided to Seventh Day Adventist Comprehensive School, as well as one server and a projector valued at EC$62,000.00.

When commenting on the project, Dr Douglas said, “I consider Grenada my home away from home. I feel that if I have the knowledge and resources to help the community I am meant to help where I can.”

The improved technology has opened doors for students who would have otherwise had barriers to their vocational development. Based on the success of this programme, more schools will now be given the opportunity to apply for technological assistance. The Principal of Mt Rose SDA School, Kimlyn De Coteau was delighted with the donation and expressed her thanks to GrenVet for the generous gift which will ensure pupils have the tools required for their information technical education and awareness.

GrenVet would like to thank Kimlyn DeCoteau, Dennie Walker, Kahil Cornwall, Marvin John, Shadel Nyack Compton, Molly Campbell, Stephen Douglas, Heather Douglas and the Douglas Animal Staff. They also wish to express their gratitude to all their donors who made the computers available, and to Uli Kuhn for donating lodging at Maca Bana Villas. Dr Douglas expressed her commitment to helping the students of Grenada to achieve their goals of excellence by offering to them the gift of technology.
