The King Hamad Youth Empowerment Award to Achieve the Sustainable Development Goals is a global award targeting any business or social enterprise with an SDG and youth focus, and is an initiative of the Ministry of Youth and Sports Affairs and supported by the United Nations Development Programme in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

It was launched at the ECOSOC meeting in 2017 by the Minister of Youth and Sports Affairs, HE Hesham bin Mohammed Al Jowder, and is open to all Member States. The aim of the award is to recognise youth that are productive contributors to their communities. The award has 4 objectives:

  1. Stimulate different sectors to empowering young people
  2. Encourage various sectors to work on a better future for the youth
  3. Focus on youth supporters
  4. Draw global attention to the unique youth experiments and share that knowledge to be adopted in different countries

All nominees must be from a nation with official UN representation.

Applicants in the different categories are assessed against set criteria, developed in cooperation with UNDP-Bahrain.

Applications are now open and winners will be announced at next year’s ECOSOC meeting whereby winners will be presented with an award or a grant. The Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) is the United Nations’ central platform for reflection, debate, and innovative thinking on sustainable development.

The award will be granted in the following 4 categories:

  • Government sector (nominees must be a ministry or authority that reports to the government)
  • Private sector (nominees must be a certified, for-profit company)
  • Non-profit organisations (nominees must be a certified non-profit organisation)
  • Individuals (nominees must be a youth age 15 to 30).
