The Award-winning beekeepers, environmental scientist, Dr Valma Jessamy and Attorney Jerry Edwin, Heads of Eden Apiaries, paid a courtesy call to Prime Minister Dr the Rt Hon. Keith Mitchell, at his office on Wednesday, 11 November.

The duo had just returned from the 84th National Honey Show held in London, where they won the highly coveted Medal of Ukraine.

The Prime Minister, who is a fan of their company, Eden Apiaries, a boutique organic apiary based in Grenville Vale in the constituency of St George NW, was high in commendation for the duo.

According to the Prime Minister, “theirs is a business that should be used as a model for other small businesses islandwide. They have combined passion with innovation for an award-winning tasty, natural product that is free of impurities.”

Dr Jessamy, in outlining how they got started in the industry, said that they had no choice in the matter. “I started beekeeping in May 2009 when a swarm of bees came into the garden and refused to leave. The garden project was started in October 2007 and formally opened 22 April 2009 (Earth Day). We are still developing the project, and have planted several orchards of spice and fruit trees. The bees feed on native plants and wildflowers which we have kept in the garden and surroundings.”

Eden Apiaries is the fourth winner of the coveted Medal, and the first from the Caribbean region.
