International Women’s Day Celebrated by CIBC

Sunday, 8 March was a significant day for women across the globe. This day, which became a popular event after 1977 — when the United Nations invited member states to proclaim March 8 as the UN day for women’s rights and world peace — was celebrated by CIBC FirstCaribbean International Bank across all 17 territories in which the bank operates.

In Grenada the bank celebrated its female employees in a unique way. On 4 March, CIBC FirstCaribbean invited Ms. Wendy Williams, Senior Nurse at the Family Planning Unit, to speak with the bank’s female employees on various health issues that are crucial for women. These included general health care and the need for health checks such as pap smears and contraceptive use and options.

The staff expressed appreciation  for the seminar, and thanked the bank for focusing on female health issues. “The information discussed was very relevant for any woman and we are grateful for the materials presented today which will be implemented in our daily routines,” said Joanna Marryshow, an employee of the bank for 24 years.

In addition to the activities planned for its staff, on Friday 6 March, the bank also made a significant contribution to the Grenada National Organisation of Women (GNOW), to assist with the organisation’s’ activities, which focus on gender equality and the empowerment of women.

A donation of $1,500 was presented to the organization to support the costs of a theatre show which was held on Sunday 8 February at Marryshow House, and also to aid with the facilitation of youth seminars focusing on adjusting the mindset of our nation’s children regarding gender equality and domestic violence.

Nigel Ollivierre, Country Manager applauded the women that make up a considerable percentage of the bank’s staff. “We recognize the need to celebrate this day and the women of our establishment. They play a valuable role in our success as one of the leading banking institutions across the region. Through this seminar, we are saying ‘thank you’, and hope that the activities planned in their honour will serve to further enrich their lives and that of our nation in very significant and rewarding ways” he said.

Every CIBC FirstCaribbean territory celebrated International Women’s Day in various ways, from financial seminars to gift giving. Additionally, each country donated funds to a local organization that provides support and empowerment resources to women. As one of the region’s leading banking institutions, CIBC FirstCaribbean International Bank remains dedicated to its community and employees. This is clearly demonstrated in the various staff initiatives undertaken throughout the year. The number of market-leading financial services provided by the bank — allowing customers to accomplish their personal and business goals — is also evidence of the bank’s commitment to its share and stakeholders.
