Lucy’s Straw Hat is not merely a play; it is a mirror held up to our society, reflecting our humanity, our pain, our failures, and our hopes.
Written and directed by the exceptionally gifted Chris DeRiggs, a man I am privileged to call my uncle, this production is another testament to the creative genius I have witnessed and admired over the decades. Yet, this work stands apart. It does not simply entertain; it reaches into the soul and gently demands that we confront uncomfortable truths.
From the very first reading, my emotions stood at the shoreline, ready to overflow like a restless tide. Uncle Chris has ventured far beyond the boundaries of my imagination and delivered a masterpiece that strikes home differently.
As my mind journeys alongside the tragic final voyage of the MV Island Queen, I am left wrestling with profound questions about family, second chances, the responsibilities of government, the role of the press, communication, seaworthiness, true love, and the liberating power of forgiveness.
This production breathes life into history. The stage itself became an ocean, carrying us through waves of sorrow, reflection, and hope. Every scene whispered, every line echoed, and every performance planted seeds of conversation that will continue to grow long after the curtains have closed.
As a proud member of Heritage Theatre Company, I extend my deepest gratitude to every person whose hands and hearts helped bring this vision to life. To the cast members, who transformed words into living memories; to the backstage team, the invisible architects who stitched magic together in silence; to the front-of-house team, who welcomed audiences with warmth and grace; and to every member of the Heritage family — thank you.
Heritage is more than a theatre company. It is a heartbeat. It is a lighthouse standing boldly against the storms of forgetfulness, preserving our stories for generations to come. It teaches us that culture is not a relic to be stored away, but a living flame to be carried forward.
May this production remain timeless, impactful, and forever etched in our collective memory.
Congratulations uncle and the entire Heritage Theatre Company. Continue to let our gifts speak, because when Heritage takes the stage, history finds its voice.
Long live Heritage. One Love.
