In a performance marked by power, composure, and precision, Grenada’s Suerena Alexander has etched her name into junior college athletics history. On Thursday, 14 May 2026, the South Plains College standout delivered a commanding display at the 2026 NJCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships, capturing gold in the Women’s Javelin Throw and rewriting the record books in the process.
The St David native, a proud product of the St David Catholic Secondary School and Track Blazers athletic club, produced a championship-winning throw of 49.57 metres to firmly secure the US national title.
Alexander’s ascent to the top of USA’s Junior College system has been both steady and impressive. She closed 2025 with a silver medal finish at the NJCAA Championships with a 47.62m effort, then opened her 2026 campaign with a throw of 42.81m in early April. From there, she incrementally improved throughout the season, eventually recording a personal best of 49.66m at West Texas Relays to position herself as the top seed heading into the 2026 championships.
In her opening attempt on day 1 of competition, Alexander wasted no time asserting control, unleashing a massive 49.57m throw that proved insurmountable for the remainder of the competition and effectively sealed victory in the first round. That single effort carried historic significance. It eclipsed the previous stadium record of 46.35m, set in 2019 by fellow South Plains alumna Akira Phillip and fell 1.07m shy of the 50.64m championship record set by Rejoice Agbewodie in 2025.
It was a moment that underscored both Alexander’s class and the continued excellence of Grenadian throwers on the regional and international stage.
The victory provides a massive psychological boost for the Grenadian contingent at the championships. Alexander is one of 5 Spice Isle athletes currently representing the South Plains College “Lady Texans” and “Texans”. She competes alongside Rayvohn Telesford (SDCSS), Joshem Sylvester (SAASS), Cheffonia Houston (AHS) and Kemron Mathlyn (GBSS).
As the championships continue, the “Girl from St David” has set a high bar for her compatriots. For now, however, she stands alone at the top, a national champion who went to the desert of New Mexico and returned a record-breaker.
